Multimedia solutions – easy handset configuration is now at hand!

In this evolving ecosystem, Gemalto is paving the way in leading the SIM industry to its next level. With the UpTeq Multimedia offer, Gemalto is unleashing a new generation of SIM cards and services on the market, focusing its latest innovations from Smart Card Web Server technology to OMA https protocol and USB IC High Speed Protocol to provide answers to operators’ concerns about mobile applications development, delivery and management.

With Smart Card Web Server technology at its heart, UpTeq Multimedia provides complementary solutions to both increases the addressable market base for applications, and provides a new customization channel separate from the handset.
This addresses the operator concerns of service and application development and delivery, handset configuration.

SIM Development Environment
sim_interface

The Smart Card Web Server is a new way to develop and deploy operator multimedia services and applications in the SIM.

The Smart Card Web Server technology leverages client software (or browser) already present in the handset, to run local web applications preloaded into the SIM. Local web-based applications are securely stored in the SIM card and can be updated remotely owing to the implementation of OMA https protocol within our remote management platform called LIveServides platform.

Unique differentiators

  • Easy to deploy There’s no need to deploy an agent with the handset - Smart Card Web Server technology leverages the already-present handset browser and standardized BIP TCP server mode protocol
  • Less fragmented environment While developing on the Smart Card Web Server, Mobile Operators no longer have to cope with handset fragmentation and the complex client distribution issues it implies. With the SCWS development, application content is rendered automatically and screen adaptation could be done Over- The-Air at SIM insertion in handset (using IMEI tracking features)
  • Rich and evolutionary UI The Smart Card Web Server as an application development environement will evolve with browser capabilities (JavaScript, Ajax) and will also leverage web runtime extensions like Adobe Flash
  • Open to the webBased on the browser, any services created with Smart Card Web Server technology provide a smooth transition to online services
  • Portable and personalized All Smart Card Web Server-based applications environments and end-user personalization can be ported from one handset to another
  • Remotely manageable and always up-to-date Smart Card Web Server-based services and applications can be managed transparently and remotely.

LiveServices
sim_interface

The lifecycle of data services is, by nature, short. Operators introduce new services all the time. Therefore, content, services & applications stored need constant updates to maintain end-user interest. In order to refresh content in the Multimedia SIM, Gemalto introduces the LiveServices infrastructure for the remote live management of Smart Card Web Server based applications..

LiveServices are composed of 4 modules:

- LiveRendering to adapt your user experience to handset capabilities and screen size
- LiveMonitoring to follow subscribers services and applications usage
- LiveUpdate to manage services portal or software versioning on-the-go
- LiveSegmentation to segment your services and applications according to users preferences

LiveServices Unique differentiators

  • A unique platform to manage Smart Card Web Server based applications Operators gain access to a unique platform for the joint management of segmentation and monitoring of Smart Card Web Server based applications.
  • Hosted and Plug & PlayOffered in hosted mode, LiveServices is open to any operator and requires little integration with the operator infrastructure.
  • Independent from the handset platformBeing handset independent, it provides a consistent way to manage operator services, applications and customization.

Multimedia solutions - taking SIM technology to the next level

Multimedia SIM integrates all the latest standardized technologies of the SIM industry to deliver a top-class product to both operators and end-users.

  • MultimediaReady Standard ISO cards embedding a web server and extended memory (from 256k to 1MB)
  • FullMultimedia Hi-Speed cards (USB IC) embedding both a web server and mass storage capacity (up to 1GB)

What is the Smart Card Web Server?
tetiere_solution_offer

The SCWS is a server application in the SIM that responds to HTTP1.1 requests such as xHTML pages and multimedia content, which are then displayed by the WAP/Internet browser of the mobile phone.

It is specified by the Open Mobile Alliance.

How does the SCWS communicate with the handset?

SCWS communicates with the handset via one of two possible bearers depending of the SIM card the handset is supporting:

  • For MultimediaReady:

BIP server mode

bip_tcp_server

  • For FullMultimedia:

TCP-IP

bip_tcp_server

sim_interface

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is used to transfer or convey information between the handset agent, internet browser, and the SIM SCWS.

How is the SCWS managed remotely?
  • SCWS and its servlets can be managed remotely, to modify, add to or adapt their contents. For this, a new protocol has been defined and standardized at OMA to open a secure pipeline between the SCWS in the card and the Over-The-Air platform for:
    • Remote management of SCWS local pages
    • Secure interaction between the card and a telecom operator server
  • Main characteristics:
    • The card is seen as a client
    • The OTA platform is seen as a server
    • The card communicates with the OTA platform using Web protocols (HTTPS)
    • Security layer is "Transport Layer Security" (the "S" in HTTPS), in a "Pre-Shared Key" mode
    • Part of the intelligence is switched to the client (retry management, for instance)

SCWS Remote management is provided by Gemalto under license from LiveServices

What is USB-IC or the so-called High-Speed Protocol?

USB-IC for "Universal Serial Bus Inter-Chip" is the new standardized High Speed Protocol (HSP), enabling SIMs to enhance Internet and other multimedia applications such as Smart Card Web Server technology.

The USB-IC is the evolution of USB 2.0 adapted to the smart card world, especially in reducing power consumption.

When introduced in a USB-IC enabled handset, the USB-IC will be able to provide 3 subclasses:

ICCD to transport APDU over USB-IC
To access ETIS 2G-3G File Systems, for example

apdu

EEM to transport TCP-IP over USB-IC
To access Smart Card Web Server pages

apdu

Mass Storage
To access Multimedia content such as music, picture, video

tcp_ip

What is a high capacity SIM card?

The Multimedia SIM cards, thanks to the High Speed Protocol (USB-IC) and Large Memory capacity, revisit the mobile user experience by enriching communication services and facilitating access to multimedia content and data services.

Architecture

The Multimedia SIM has a two-component architecture offering a large, secured and controlled memory.

  • 2-chips architecture
    • SIM controller including NAND flash controller
    • External NAND flash (from 128MB to GB)

Memory technologies

The Multimedia SIM combines several types of memory:

  • NAND flash memory Stores the operator's data using Multimedia SIM applications such as Smart Card Web Server and Advanced Phonebook; end-users will also be able to store personal Multimedia content such as pictures or music.

The NAND Flash area is divided into two:

1 - controlled by the Telecom Operator to securely store operator content (Smart Card Web Server pages, handset customization, and other Multimedia applications' data)
2 - controlled by the End-User / Handset for host and end-user mass data storage like movies, photos, music, ...
